30 Aug 2006 - September Newsletter
Dear Parents & Friends
Nursery Department
We welcome all our children returning for their pre-school returning for their pre-school year. We know that we will have lots of fun playing and learning together. Our new children will be busy starting nursery over the next couple of weeks. The nursery staff are looking forward to getting to know them all and their parents/carers too.
School Sweatshirts
It would be very helpful if you could name your child?s sweatshirts/polo shirts. This will help to ensure that they do not get lost.
Children's Traffic Club
If your child has recently truned 3 and you have not received their Children?s Traffic Club registration pack, please speak to Mrs Kettell or Miss Stirling.
Sweets and Drinks
Can we please remind all parents not to put juice or food in their child?s nursery bags. This would help us to protect those children who have food allergies. Everyone is offered a drink and snack everyday in nursery.
Spare Clothes
We would welcome any spare clothes (particularly girls pants) for children to change into when wet.
Soft Shoes
We encourage children to wear soft shoes in nursery. They are safe for climbing and moving around nursery equipment.
Collection Times
Can we please remind parents that the very last time for collecting their child from nursery is:
Morning session ? 11.50a.m.
Afternoon session - 3.05p.m.
Consent Forms
We would appreciate if you could return your child?s consent form for short walks/changing and photographs as soon as possible.
Infant School
A short Newsletter to say welcome back to everyone. A special welcome to Primary 1 children and their parents and to new children and their parents who have joined other classes. All the children have made a terrific start, settled well and already their hard work has started.
Summer as always had passed so quickly but I think we?ll all agree that the weather has been amazing and allowed us to be outside in the sunshine most of the holidays. The children especially appear to have grown and developed greatly as a result.
Staff Changes
As always school life changes a little with staff moving on and new staff joining us. We welcome Mrs Gardyne, our new Depute Head Teacher, who as well as assisting me, will be sharing P1/3 with Miss Nock. We also welcome Miss Nock and Miss Swaney who will be taking P1/3 and P2/6. We wish them a happy, valuable year with us.
We welcome back Mrs Bell, who has returned from her maternity leave. As Mrs Mason continues her maternity leave following of the birth of her baby boy, we wish her well and welcome Mrs Clapperton who will take her place for most of this session. We also wish Miss Watt farewell and thank her for all her hard work and commitment to the school and in her place we welcome Mrs Gray who will take her place on a temporary basis.
Making moves across departments we welcome Mrs Malcolm to the Infant Dept. whilst we see Mrs Wood joining the Nursery Team.

Primary One
The children all came into school happily and looked very smart in their uniforms. They are already learning the new routines and meeting everyone in school. From Wednesday 23rd August to Friday 1st September they will attend for mornings only and then from Monday 4th September they will attend full time.
P.E. has already started. The pupils should bring named T-shirt, shorts and gym shoes ni a gym bag.
On Wednesday 30th August they will have class photographs taken for the local newspapers and then on Friday 1st September they will be inviting their parents to lunch. Busy times for P1s!
Our Values
We will again be having a focus on the values ? important to us all. We are starting the year with ?Hope? ? that inner optimistic strength that keeps us going when things get difficult. I would be very glad if you could talk to your child about what it means to have ?hope? and how it requires a strong minded person who sees things optimistically.
Mid-Morning Milk
The price of milk for the year is £28.50. Cost of milk this term is £9.50. Two further payments of £9.50 will be due ? one in January and one after Easter. Payment is due now. If payment is not received by Monday 28th August we will assume you do not wish your child to have school milk. If your child decides they want to have milk after this date unfortunately they will have to wait until the new term in January.
Dinner Money
School meals cost £1.45 per day. Please send your child?s money in a named purse /envelope /paper to keep it safe. I would really like dinner money paid weekly and this can be paid at the office on a Monday morning. This cuts down on the queues at the Dinner Hall and avoids loss of precious pennies. The weekly payment is £5.80 for four days.
A Plea ?
Any spare socks or pants would be gratefully appreciated. They seem to vanish!
Reminders
Pupil Information
Please let us know of any changes of address and especially phone numbers, emergency contacts etc. Mobile phone numbers are particularly susceptible to change. Thanks for your support with this.
P.E. Kit
Every child should bring a named T-shirt, shorts and gym shoes in a named bag. These can be brought in on a Monday and taken home for washing on a Friday. It is an essential part of the school equipment. Gym bags can be bought through the office from the company we order our school uniforms from.
Packed Lunches
Reminder that nothing containing nuts should brought into school in case of allergies ? wrappers indicate this.
Tuck
Our free fruit scheme is fortunately continuing again this year. On a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we would request that the children need bring no snack as there will be a variety of healthy fruit on offer. On a Monday and Friday our Tuck Shop will be selling a variety of healthy snacks agreed by the pupils through this year?s Pupil Council Representatives. These will be as varied as possible and nothing will cost more than 20 pence.
I would again request no sweets be brought to school either in lunch boxes or for a snack. These can then be used as treats at other times and thus encourage our children in good eating habits for life.
Lost Property
All lost property is kept in Mr Ferguson?s office at the main door. If a child does lose something please check with Mr Ferguson. Pleas make sure you name all items your child brings to school as they can get quite distressed when something goes missing. Permanent marker pens are a great boon these days!
Playground
To ensure the safety of all our children and families we would request no dogs in our playground. Also we would ask that bikes be walked through the playground.
Attendance
To ensure that your child has the best opportunity for learning, daily attendance is not only mandatory but also so essential for their social and emotional needs and to give the stability in their learning ? Monday to Friday, inclusive. Should your child be unwell, a phone call and note are necessary, explaining the reason for the absence. If at dentist, please phone us at school to discuss your situation. Separate guidance will be coming out later this week regarding absence management.
Uniform
Great to see so many in their uniform. The children are very proud to wear their chosen colours and it give school such a pride in its identity. On Fridays it looks so smart in Assembly and at times they get special stickers for this.
Helpers
We are always really keen to have parents helping our school life in any way at a time that suits. I?ll be sending out a note for volunteers shortly. Going through police checks is a simple procedure and should not put off volunteers.
Parents Room
This is becoming quite established, being used for all sorts of Parent meetings etc and also as a drop-in place. We are hoping to get Pamper Taster Sessions starting shortly on a Friday morning and also coffee sessions.
P.T.A
As we are now amalgamated all our families should provide us with a thriving parent body. The first get together is on August 30th at 7.00p.m. Look out for details.
Various Groups
We shall be getting our various groups e.g. Travel Plan, Health and Grounds up and running shortly. We welcome new people to these to add new ideas to these already started.
You will have noticed that we have now got our path in the grounds and the basis of our outdoor class area ? so exciting developments ahead for the grounds. You will also notice that our maze has suffered from the frost. Work is planned to restore this super feature.
Parent Workshops
I shall be sending our a letter for your views/ideas. Please respond to this as it will help shape our planning for this year.
Games Mornings
We have already established our dates for the coming year which you will see on the year calendar. We look forward to lots of support and fun!
Enterprising Activities
We will be looking forward to another year of our pupils and school being involved in Enterprising activities. Just before the holidays P2/4 made cards as part of their mini beast project. They wrote to various Garden Centres etc and as a result they earned £5 for sales at Strawberry Corner, one of our business links. They have yet to decide how that will be spent!
Strawberry Corner have also been busy with us, creating two beautiful planters at the Staff Entrance of School. This money came from a Health and Well-Being Grant the school applied for last year.
